Church of St. John
ORTHODOX CHURCH of ST.JOHN
was, as the story goes, built on the remains of a Turkish mosque in
1790, in a Baroque variant with elements of Rococo. The interior is
decorated by an icon og the Holy Mother, a gift by the monks of the
Jazak monastery. The icon was brought from Kosovo in the Great
Migration of the Serbs. The church also houses an exeptionally valuable
iconostasis painted in 1809 by Pavle Djurkovic. All this has
contributed to the fact that the "Small Church", as it is called by the
citizens of Sombor, has been declared a cultural asset of exeptional
importance.
